Girl Scout Day at Mizzou Engineering inspires creativity in STEM

Give a girl a building block, she'll play for a day. Teach her how to design a building out of toothpicks and marshmallows, and she'll think about how she can build the future. Mizzou’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE) hosted Girl Scout Day, an event for local girl scouts to learn about engineering.

App to help families find restroom accommodations

Families and individuals needing special restroom accommodations could have an easier time finding public bathrooms in the future, thanks to an app in development at Mizzou Engineering.

Student Volunteers Lend a Hand

More than 20 Mizzou Engineering students sacrificed a portion of their time away from school during the winter break to help others. Students participated in a week-long Mizzou Alternative Breaks (MAB) service trip in early January, prior to the start of the spring semester. Since 1991, Mizzou Alternative Breaks has been sending groups of students on trips around the country to volunteer at various places in need.

STEM Cubs ignites students’ curiosity for engineering

The College of Engineering’s STEM Cubs had students from kindergarten through fifth grade roaring about STEM. STEM Cubs is a day camp aimed at increasing access to science, technology, engineering and math for lower income and underrepresented minority students. Held three times a year, the fall edition focused on structure building. The camp incorporates STEM concepts into fun activities that resonant with students and show them these seemingly challenging subjects are exciting and doable.

Engineering, Columbia STEM Alliance, CPS host STEMette camp

According to recent data from the National Science Foundation, women make up half of the total college-educated workforce nationally, but they account for just 29 percent of the workforce in science and engineering. One way of attempting to end this disparity involves getting girls interested in STEM fields at an early age, and Mizzou Engineering and the Columbia STEM Alliance recently hosted a camp as part of an effort to do just that.

Army Ants wrap up an incredible year of FIRST Robotics

Army Ants, Columbia’s FIRST Robotics team, recently wrapped a tremendous academic year. The organization includes nearly 40 students from Columbia Public Schools alongside several adult mentors. That’s where Mizzou Engineering comes in. Biomedical, Biological and Chemical Engineering Professor Kevin Gillis has been a mentor for the organization since its foundation in 2011, including spending several years as its chief mentor.

Robotics Design Challenge encourages young students to pursue STEM

About 400 fourth and fifth graders traveled from all around the state to compete Saturday in MU’s 14th annual Robotics Design Challenge, where students put their programming skills to the test to see if their robots could conquer the course.
