Renovating History: Shamrock Plaza and Medallion Reconstruction Underway
On October 19, the shamrock was removed and the concrete around it was demolished as part of the first phase of a reconstruction project. Steve Borgelt, a Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Biomedical, Biological and Chemical Engineering, says he decided about three years ago that the Shamrock Plaza and Medallion, which was constructed in 1921, needed to be renovated to match the well-maintained appearance of the historic buildings that surround Francis Quadrangle.
College hosts third annual Diverse Engineering Professionals Conference
The Diverse Engineering Professionals Conference, or DEPC, is the only of its kind in the nation, making the College of Engineering a key leader in diversity and inclusion initiatives across college campuses. The conference, held Saturday, Oct. 26, is an inclusive space for engineering students of all backgrounds to develop themselves professionally as well as interact with employers who value diversity.
MU hosts roundtable on distracted driving
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in conjunction with the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety and StopDistractions.org, held a “Distracted Driving Roundtable: Act to End Deadly Distractions” at the University of Missouri’s Columbia campus Oct. 29.
Emerging engineer Melinda Groves spends summer at NASA
Senior Melinda Groves spent this past summer interning at one of the nation’s most iconic federal agencies: NASA. Working as a mechanical engineering intern, Groves was based at the NASA John Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, as part of the Icing Research group.
Blue Ribbon Panel on Hyperloop Releases Report
Missouri’s Special Blue Ribbon Panel on Hyperloop (BRPH) released its final report during a news conference on the Francis Quadrangle Oct. 28. Missouri House Speaker Elijah Haahr created the panel in March following a feasibility study completed by engineering firms Black & Veatch and Olsson. The panel, comprised of public and private leaders across Missouri, was tasked with providing recommendations on how to make hyperloop a reality in Missouri.
MU recognized for innovative culture
The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) recently launched a national campaign that recognizes Mizzou’s innovative culture. NAI chose MU to host the kickoff due to our university’s past successes in supporting early-stage innovations.
Students have chance to mingle with scholarship donors at annual dinner
The MU College of Engineering has awarded 547 students more than $1.2 million in scholarships for the current academic year. The recipients had an opportunity to meet and mingle with the friends and faculty of the College who fund their scholarships at the annual scholarship dinner at Memorial Union.
Mizzou alumnus honors family with $1.7 million in recent gifts
Today University of Missouri officials announced two gifts from an alumnus and his wife to honor his family’s legacy and long-time support of Missouri’s flagship university. Ken Donohew, a 1967 industrial engineering graduate, and his wife, Ellen Kippel, recently gave $1.7 million, bringing his lifetime giving to more than $3 million.
MU Engineering/School of Medicine researcher receives $3.7 million federal grant
With a $3.7 million federal grant, MU is taking the first step in an effort to produce a more effective immunotherapy treatment for cancer patients. This grant is part of the National Institutes of Health “Cancer MoonShot Initiative” whose goal is to make a decade’s worth of cancer research progress within five years, according to the NIH website.
The New Frontier in Global Relations: Cyberspace
A Mizzou alumnus whose agency is responsible for building out cyber defense capabilities for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) says wars of the future will start in cyberspace. Jason Martin, BA ’97, is acting director of the Cyber Development Directorate for the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) at Fort Meade, Maryland and the vice director of the Development and Business Center at DISA.
