Imagine watching a video from a presidential candidate on your favorite political blog, only to find out later that the candidate not only disavows the video but claims she never made the video in the first place. These so-called “deepfake videos,” which use fabricated photos and audio, are among the biggest challenges facing the news industry.

Four students represented the College of Engineering at the MIT Reality Hack where participants were challenged with developing new cross reality experiences using the industry’s best technology.

Aerial Reconnaissance

Yi Shang, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, recently received a four-year, $372,000 grant from the MDC to assess the feasibility of using unmanned aircraft systems (drones) and deep learning computing techniques for waterfowl and wetland habitat monitoring.

Grant Proposal Designed to Elevate Women in Tech-Based Ventures

A collaboration between the College of Engineering and the Trulaske College of Business seeks to increase the number of women entrepreneurs leading technology-based companies. COE Associate Professor Heather Hunt and Assistant Professor Ferris Pfeiffer teamed up with Annette Kendall, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Trulaske College of Business, to apply for a faculty grant from VentureWell, which “supports faculty in developing programs that cultivate student innovators and promote institutional change.”

Student Success Focus of NSF Grant

A five-year project that started Jan. 1, 2020 seeks to increase the recruitment and retention of high-achieving undergraduates and graduate students from low-income backgrounds to earn degrees in civil engineering. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program.

Student Volunteers Lend a Hand

More than 20 Mizzou Engineering students sacrificed a portion of their time away from school during the winter break to help others. Students participated in a week-long Mizzou Alternative Breaks (MAB) service trip in early January, prior to the start of the spring semester. Since 1991, Mizzou Alternative Breaks has been sending groups of students on trips around the country to volunteer at various places in need.

3D Printers in Service to Others

A Mizzou student organization based in the College of Engineering recently has completed a pair of projects designed to help others. The 3D Printing Club (3DPC), which is open to any current student or employee of the university, had planned to ship a prototype of a prosthetic hand to a charity in India and did install a tactile map of the northwest section of campus in front of the south entrance to Jesse Hall in December.

Engineering Scholar to Continue Studies

Recent Mizzou Engineering graduate Luke Guerdan liked to stay busy when he was a student studying computer science and psychology, with a minor in mathematics.
