EECS Student Wins People’s Choice Award at 3MT® Competition

A Mizzou Engineer took home the People’s Choice award at this year’s 3MT® competition sponsored by the University of Missouri Graduate School. Anup Mishra, a PhD candidate in electrical engineering and computer science, presented a three-minute thesis on creating personalized alerts to reduce alarm fatigue using machine learning techniques in health care settings.

Mizzou Engineers, USGS Create Tool to Test Oil in Water

Those responding to oil spills could soon have an easier way to determine the environmental impacts. A Mizzou Engineer is helping develop a tool to analyze water samples and measure oil levels using a smart phone. Dong Xu, Shumaker Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is working on the project with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Mizzou Engineering Alumnus Part of Naval Team Studying Impact of UV Light on COVID-19

For his thesis project at Mizzou Engineering, Brett Huhman ’03, ’06, developed a method to use ultraviolet (UV) light to combat anthrax. While it was timely in the early 2000s, Huhman admits he never thought he’d return to that research. Then came COVID-19. Now, Huhman is part of a U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) team analyzing how well ultraviolet light sources can combat the coronavirus.

Students Create VR Software to Diagnose, Monitor Concussions

A group of Mizzou Engineering seniors are developing an innovative way to determine the severity of concussions. For their computer science capstone project, the students are designing software that would work with virtual reality goggles to allow users to diagnose and monitor head injuries.

Mizzou Engineer Part of Team Working to Restore Organ Function

Giovanna Guidoboni, a professor in electrical engineering and computer science and in mathematics, is part of an interdisciplinary team from across the country selected to study the lower urinary tract in hopes of restoring bladder function to those who suffer from urinary incontinence. About 50% of women and 25% of men suffer from bladder dysfunction.
