Developing a targeted delivery system to treat cancer

In the ongoing battle to find ways to treat cancer, a team at the University of Missouri is addressing the problem from multiple angles, but with a precision approach. Cancer patients are often given chemotherapy, cancer-fighting drugs that kill cancerous cells and can also have harsh effects on healthy cells. But with recent developments in medical technology, researchers have started developing targeted approaches known as precision medicine, and the new treatments can cause less collateral damage to the body.

CAVE to Provide Immersive Virtual Experience

Imagine studying a protein by walking through its three-dimensional structure. Or researching traffic patterns by standing alongside a virtual highway. Or safely exploring the structural integrity of a house while it’s on fire. Mizzou Engineers will soon have the capability to do these things, thanks to a CAVE opening this year in Lafferre Hall.

Engineering an Olympic Opportunity

Engineering spans into almost every part of one’s daily life. For senior Sarah Thompson, this includes being a student-athlete on the Mizzou swim team. The biological engineering major enjoys learning the science behind being a better swimmer, including biology, fluid mechanics and materials science.

Young Honored with Top Investigator Award

Matthias Young, assistant professor in biomedical, biological and chemical engineering, received the prestigious 2020 Paul H. Holloway Young Investigator Award from the American Vacuum Society (AVS) Thin Film Division.

Lee Wins Outstanding Poster Award at American Physical Society Annual Meeting

A Mizzou Engineering senior majoring in both chemical engineering and physics received an Outstanding Poster Award during the virtual American Physical Society’s (APS) Division of Plasma Physics 62nd Annual Meeting in November 2020. “The ‘perfect energy source’ is not within our grasp yet, but we are getting closer by the day.”

Six Mizzou Engineers Named McNair Scholars

The 2020-2021 class of University of Missouri McNair Scholars includes six engineering students.

Gillis Named Chair of Biomedical, Biological and Chemical Engineering

Professor Kevin Gillis was named department chair for Biomedical, Biological and Chemical Engineering (BBCE) at the College of Engineering by Interim Dean Noah Manring. His role as department chair began Oct. 1, 2020. Gillis served as the department’s interim chair for about a year prior to being named chair.

Virtual Career Fair Draws Over 750 Participants

Mizzou Engineering hosted its first-ever Virtual Career Fair in September 2020. More than 750 students and alumni interacted with nearly 150 employers from all engineering areas within the College of Engineering.

Rebuilding Heart Valves Using Tissue Engineering

Assistant Professor Soumen Jana in the Department of Biomedical, Biological and Chemical Engineering wants to develop a different solution for heart valve repair. And the projected goal of this solution is a tissue-engineered heart valve that grows and works like native heart valves.
