Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Craig Kluever

Craig Kluever, professor and director of undergraduate studies for the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), was awarded a 2020 William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence.

“I am honored and humbled by this award,” Kluever said. “Throughout my career I’ve tried to keep students engaged in the classroom, and I’ve found that including real engineering systems into homework and lectures helps. Who doesn’t want to analyze and design jet and rocket engines, satellite orbits, or airplane trajectories?”

UM System President and MU Chancellor Mun Choi, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Latha Ramchand, and President and CEO of the eastern and central Missouri region of Commerce Bank Steve Sowers presented Kluever the award, which includes a $10,000 check, during Kluever’s class.

“Professor Kluever has served as an exemplary teacher in MAE for many years, and is the most beloved instructor in the department,” Interim Dean of the College of Engineering and MAE department chair Noah Manring said. “Craig’s teaching style makes complicated subjects easy to learn, and the students know that he cares. The entire MAE department is proud of his accomplishments.”

Kluever is thankful to everyone who helped put together the nomination materials. This group includes Manring, and former and current students who wrote letters in support of his nomination.

Before joining Mizzou in 1993, Kluever worked in the Space Shuttle Guidance, Navigation and Control group at Rockwell International. Funding for his research has come from NASA, Caterpillar, Inc., the Science Applications International Corporation and Global Aerospace Corporation.
