Satish Nair recently received a top accolade in his field, earning election as a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering.

Nair, a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, joined the ranks of top ASME members honored for their tremendous achievements in the engineering field.

His research has long focused on computational neuroscience, which uses mathematical models and theories to better understand the capabilities of the brain and nervous system. Nair’s research has been funded by organizations such as the National Science Foundation, NASA and the U.S. Air Force, among others.

Nair also has done tremendous outreach in this area, in addition to his work in the lab and classroom. He serves as director of an NSF Research Experiences for Teachers in Neural Science or Neural Engineering site and has run LEGO robotics camps, robotics design challenges, a rural and title-1 elementary program TECH4K5, prepared sample curricula for elementary school teachers and held various events geared toward either directly reaching students or training their teachers to instill a passion for STEM at a young age.

Nair also previously served as past chair of ASME’s Dynamic Systems and Control Division.
