Syed Kamrul Islam is head of EECS.

Syed Kumrul Islam, chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Mizzou, has been elected secretary of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA) for the Central States Region.

ECEDHA is made up of electrical and computer engineering department chairs from the U.S. and Canada. The group’s main goals are to advance electrical and computer engineering education, facilitate interaction and exchange ideas, and improve ties with industry and government professionals.

Islam’s term began in July. He is now in line to serve as vice-chair and then chair of the Central States Region. In addition to Missouri, the region includes Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, North Dakota and South Dakota.

“I am excited to represent the central states as secretary of the association,” Islam said. “It’s important for those of us in electrical and computer engineering to keep lines of communication open between one another and those within the profession. I look forward to serving as a liaison between department chairs, the association and the industry.”

Islam took the helm of EECS at Mizzou in 2018. His current research interests include semiconductor devices, high-temperature electronics, analog and mixed-signal circuit design, bio-microelectronics and nanotechnology. Prior to coming to Mizzou Engineering, Islam served as professor, James W. McConnell Endowed Chair and associate head for Academic Affairs of the EECS department at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Islam is also on the editorial board of Biosensors, an international peer-reviewed journal on the technology and science of biosensors published by MDPI.
